Christmas
What is the significance of Christmas?
Next year is a significant year for Darlington. It marks the 200th anniversary of something that changed the world. On 27th September 1825 the Stockton and Darlington railway was opened. In the following years rail travel developed all over the world and made a massive change to transport and travel. To the present day we benefit from what happened 200 years ago.
Each year at Christmas time we think about something that happened around 2,000 years ago that changed the world. A baby was born in a place called Bethlehem who grew up and lived a perfect life, was killed by crucifixion, and rose from the dead three days later. To the present day people benefit from what happened 2,000 years ago.
Millions and millions of people all over the world believe in, and follow, the one born in Bethlehem. Why do they do this? When he was born, an angel announced his birth to some shepherds in the fields near Bethlehem and said, “I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today...a Saviour has been born to you” (Luke’s gospel, chapter 2, verses 10-11).
In a world where there is much pain and misery, the baby born in Bethlehem brings joy. In a world where many people feel that life is empty and aimless, the baby born in Bethlehem brings meaning. In a world where there is much guilt, the baby born in Bethlehem brings forgiveness. That baby is Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Why not come along to church this Christmas to find out more about him?
